Role in the ACCENT project: Coordination of best practices, organisation of activities, contribution of resources, Local Citizens’ Debates
The Arctic Centre is a research institute, an information service and a science centre. It belongs to the University of Lapland in Rovaniemi, Finland. It science centre presents in a friendly and interactive atmosphere the environment and life of the peoples of the Arctic as well as the issues related to the ongoing global changes throughout the circumpolar regions. The Science Centre organises events like public lectures, film festival, school workshops and international and national conferences.
Around 60% of the visitors coming to Arktikum in the latest years come from abroad. Visitors are mostly Europeans with a rise in the number of groups from Asia and America. In 2007, the number of visitors increased by 13%. In next coming years, tourist frequentation in Lapland will continue increasing.
