Role in the ACCENT project: Organisation of activities, contribution of resources, Local Citizens’ Debates

Science and technology in real world applications is a cornerstone in the approach of Teknikens Hus. Opened in 1988 as one of the first in Sweden our science centre now has welcomed over 3 million visitors, an average of more than 100 000 every year. Teknikens Hus is a renowned regional resource for inspiring and learning in science and technology, and we have received many national and international acknowledgments for our work. Students from the whole region visit Teknikens Hus regularly and by technology teachers’ networks we support education and provide in-service training on home ground in the local communities. Located on campus and in close cooperation with the Luleå University of Technology and the regional industry, both teacher training and entrepreneurship are important ingredients in the daily work of the centre.

Sustainable development and climate change has been on our agenda for many years. The project “Grasping Climate” was initiated in 2002 and the exhibition is still touring in Sweden and Europe. The project was awarded the regional county environmental prize in 2005 and named “Good Practice” by the European commission in 2006. Another environmental related exhibition developed and produced by Teknikens Hus is “Cold Poles – Hot Stuff”. The theme is Swedish polar research and the exhibition was inaugurated in 2007. Teknikens Hus has, throughout the years, been a requested partner in many European projects.
